5 Questions with Rich Lawson
Rich Lawson joined us as guest host on episodes 513-516. Rich is Associate Director of Technology at Evolving Web. Located in the Chicago area, he has over 16 years of Drupal experience.
What was your first Drupal website?
Multisite Drupal 6 with sites and shared content for 14 different newspapers and radio stations. The main site was getting 3.5 million views a month with quite a bit of authenticated traffic, so I felt like I really dove in the deep end.
What was your first programming language, and what did you do with it?
ColdFusion - I supported a site for the Graduate College at the University of Illinois and built a new application for faculty and staff to update graduate program data for submission to the National Research Council (NRC). I really liked that project, since I developed the full stack, worked with end users on UX, and even trained staff at the end.
What did you go to college for, and where?
I was originally pre-law at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It’s in Central Illinois. I majored in history before I decided law wasn’t for me and picked up a second major in psychology and a minor in English.I worked a bit before going back to Illinois to get my master’s degree in education.
Do you prefer quiet or noise when working? What is your noise?
It depends on what I’m doing, but I’ll often put on soundtracks in the background. The lack of vocals is nice for focus.
What is your favorite fiction book?
Is it cheating to say The Lord of the Rings? It was originally intended to be a single book, at least. If I had to pick from the series, I’d go with The Two Towers.
