5 Questions with John Picozzi
Where is your sweet spot in the web development process (back-end developer, front-end developer, design, project management, sales …)?
I thrive in more client facing & architectural roles. I love working with clients to solve problems and come up with creative solutions. I also like building POC (Proof of Concepts) to help prove (or disprove) an idea. I openly admit I know enough code to be dangerous and I have been lucky throughout my career to work with very talented backend and frontend developers.
What did you go to college for, and where?
I was fortunate to know what I wanted to do as a senior in high school. My senior year I was able to do a senior seminar project on web site design. At that point I was hooked, after high school I attended Johnson & Wales University and graduated with an AS in Web Development and a BS in Web Management & Internet Commerce.
What books have positively impacted your career?
Two books come to mind. If you have listened to the podcast at all you have heard me talk about People Powered by Jono Bacon. This book focuses on how you build and maintain communities and how those communities can help your business. As a huge advocate for open source & Drupal I’m sure you can understand how that would be appealing. The other book is a book that I read in college and since have re-read a few times. MTIV (Making the invisible visible) by Hillman Curtis is a book that talks about how to work with clients on digital projects. Hillman shares stories that illustrate his point and provides insight into improvements that could make the digital journey better for those that follow. This book has really guided me throughout my career, matter of fact it might be time to give it another read!
Outside of Drupal, what hobbies do you have?
Well I’m not sure about hobbies in the conventional sense. But when not working on Drupa at work, I organize Drupal Events and have a podcast (you might know it). I also try to work in the Drupal issue queue when I can. I honestly look forward to retirement so I can spend time with my wife and work more in the Drupal community! When I'm not at the laptop I coach baseball and do a good amount of cooking for family and friends. Don’t worry, it’s not all Drupal all the time!
What is your favorite movie franchise?
I would have to say I’m a big fan of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Growing up I was into action figures and cartoons (on tv) and I remember loving to watch the X-Men. Then in high school/college the movies came out and it started the journey. Now (of course) I’m a fan of the avengers, Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. Overall anything in the MCU is wildly entertaining to me and really plays to my ideas that anything is possible and everyone has their own super power.
