5 Questions with Ivan Stegic
Ivan is our guest host for episodes 437 thru 440.
Ivan is the CEO of TEN7, a values driven UX and Drupal development agency whose mission is to Make Things That Matter. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife, kids and two dogs; is a huge Minnesota Twins fan, a relentless ambassador for technology, science and common sense; and an eternal optimist.
What was your first Drupal website?
The first public site I ever developed and launched was animalhumanesociety.org which was built with Drupal 5 in 2009. It launched without caching enabled, which quickly brought the site down, easy fix. They are still a client of TEN7’s, and have had every version of Drupal we started!
What was your first programming language, and what did you do with it?
The first lines of code I ever wrote were Sinclair Basic on my ZX Spectrum 48k in the 1980s… they were lines of code printed in a magazine that came with cassette tapes. I still have that computer. Picture of my original hardware: https://ten7.com/blog/post/hello-world
What was your career before Drupal?
I was a research physicist at Honeywell and then at Imation, where I was in the Optical Technology Center in the Testing and Systems group. We worked on new media products like high-speed CDRW, DVDRW, BluRay RW and HDDVD. I was lucky enough to be on the team that pioneered DataPlay, a small form factor optical media, and scaled that up to manufacturing in Wahpeton, ND. Unfortunately, iPod came out right around the same time as DataPlay did so it wasn’t the huge success we thought it would be!
Tell us about your pets?
We have two English Cream miniature dachshunds, Daphne who is 6 and Liberty who is 4. They feature on the TEN7 website, with a speaking role on the Jobs page, see if you can find them. One thing that our dear friend, who is a vet, told us before we got them was that they bark all the time… so, if you’re thinking of sausage dogs as pets, be warned! Our vet was correct, they bark. All. The. Time.
What is your favorite sport and team to follow?
I’m a fan of baseball and all the traditions associated with it. I’ve adopted the Minnesota Twins as my team, and feel the real pain of getting my hopes up every season only for them to be dashed at the end. I’m also a big fan of Formula 1, and have watched races since I was a kid growing up in South Africa. I really like Sir Lewis Hamilton, support his team at Mercedes, but I think I will be switching to Ferrari in 2025 when Lewis moves there.
