Module of the Week
with Jacob Rockowitz - @jrockowitz
Admin Dialogs
The Admin Dialogs module intends to improve UI by reducing number of page loads. Instead of opening delete confirmation page the module will show the form in a dialog (modal) form. This module is a great companion to the Admin Toolbar module.
5 Questions with Melissa Bent
Melissa is our guest host for episodes 424 thru 427.
Melissa is a Principal Software Engineer at Red Hat. She leads the planning and architecture of the portions of Red Hat’s Customer Portal that are driven by Drupal. She lives in Nampa, Idaho on a small farm with her chickens, goats, and dogs and loves all things IoT, 3D printing, and plants.
What is your first memory of technology that impacted you?
When I was in seventh grade, a friend of mine gifted me my first computer. It was a 286 and had Windows 2 on it. Pretty much everything on the desktop was an ad to purchase the software. So I ended up playing a lot of solitaire. But I did figure out how to misuse the astronomy program to display comics and drawings I’d downloaded from my mom’s work computer (where they had internet). I used WordPerfect as a processor to complete reports and printed to the loudest dot matrix printer in the world. I can still hear the clack of that keyboard. But I was fascinated by that old machine.
What did you go to college for, and where?
I graduated from Boise State University (pre Fiesta Bowl) where I studied applied mathematics and computer repair and networking. I wanted to have a “practical” degree to go along with my, more generic, mathematics degree. I originally wanted to be a math teacher, but I realized I didn’t want to grade papers and deal with ridiculous parents. I ended up bridging over into development about a year after my graduation while working as a graphic designer at a non-profit. With the recent focus on AI and Machine Learning, I’m looking at brushing up my math again.
Do you play a musical instrument?
I play guitar and have since I was 14. I also sing and I’m in the market for a cello. I have passable proficiency on a ukulele and have a piano I’m starting to work on. Playing an instrument is great for hand-eye coordination, but also to maintain dexterity and strengthen your hands.
What is your favorite fiction book?
This is a tough one. Because I have a LOT of favorites. But I’ll have to go with Ender’s Game. This book was so incredibly written and the author, Orson Scott Card, uses language so exactly and effectively to unveil his story. It’s not just the words he uses, but the mechanics of the grammar and punctuation. Next up would be LOTR (of course), The Stormlight Archive, and The Dresden Files. All very different with their delivery, but all telling epic stories.
