5 Questions with Sean Walsh
Sean Walsh is our guest host for episodes 404 thru 407.
Sean has been working with Drupal since 2009. He builds and maintains sites for higher education and nonprofit clients. He organizes DrupalCamp NJ and the Central NJ Web Developers Meetup. Currently, he is the secretary of the Drupal Event Organizers Working Group.
What are your five non-core must-have Drupal modules?
In no particular order, they are Pathauto, Metatag, Media Library Edit, Twig Tweak, Editoria11y.
Where is your sweet spot in the web development process (back-end developer, front-end developer, design, project management, sales …)?
I’m a little bit of everything running a boutique agency. However, I’d say that my sweet spot is in the overlap of design, front-end, and back-end development. When working on projects, I tend to be thinking about how all the pieces fit together even if I’m not necessarily the one doing the day-to-day work on a project.
What was your career before Drupal?
Before Drupal, I was working in medical education and marketing. One of my first jobs out of college was running webinars; in that role, I worked under IT. This opened up the doors to a technical career in web development—first coding email marketing campaigns and then websites in classic ASP.
At my next job, my time was split up between technology, grant writing, and association management. I learned about the power of Drupal through a marketing event I attended, Niche Digital Conference. That started a chain reaction to converting that company’s ASP sites to Drupal, and eventually my wife and I started CrowdCG.
Do you play a musical instrument?
I play several musical instruments. Back in elementary and middle school band, I played the flute. Eventually, I switched to guitar, and that flute was used as a down payment on my first electric guitar, a sunburst Fender Stratocaster. Throughout high school and after college, I played in original bands and recorded some songs. Unfortunately, I was never going to be a rockstar, but I have picked up a bunch of other string instruments over the years (bass, mandolin, banjo, and ukulele).
What is your favorite meal?
My favorite meal is pasta with broccoli, garlic, and oil. I could eat this every day. I add crushed red pepper flakes to it for a little bit of spice.
