5 Questions with Andy Blum
Andy is our guest host for episodes 412 thru 415.
Andy is a front-end developer and Acquia Certified Front-End Specialist. As a former science teacher, he loves finding simple and elegant solutions to complex problems. His passion for learning keeps him active in the Drupal issues queues and offering help in Drupal Slack channels, particularly the #twig channel. He is currently co-maintainer of the UIKit theme and has been involved in Drupal since 2016.
What was your career before Drupal?
Prior to working in Drupal, I was a high school science teacher for three years. I taught Anatomy/Physiology, Environmental Science, Physics, and Physical Science in that time. While I enjoyed the actual “teaching” part of the job, the majority of the workload is in the cycle of assessing student knowledge and then planning future lessons to build. Now, I scratch the teaching itch by speaking at conferences, camps and on podcasts and I have months at a time to pick a topic and plan my next lesson.
What was your first Drupal website?
During college, I learned HTML, CSS, and a little bit of jQuery. After leaving teaching I joined Midnet Media, a small agency in my area that built websites for mostly local businesses and used Drupal as the CMS. The first site I built was
https://mercerhealth5kchallenge.com/
in 2016 and it’s been the home of the various 5k races in the area since that time. It was the only site I ever built that didn’t have a custom theme built for it.
What is your first memory of technology that impacted you?
In third grade I had to do a school report on George Washington Carver and my dad helped me put together a powerpoint presentation where slides could link to each other. It’s what I consider to be my first “website”, meaning powerpoint was my first IDE.
Tell us about your family
I’m married with a daughter and a dog. My wife, Alexis, is a high school Spanish teacher and we met at Ohio University’s College of Education. She’s also the professional development chair for the Ohio Foreign Language Association. My daughter, Lydia, turns 5 this month and is very excited to start school this fall. My dog, Pete, is a handsome boy.
What is your favorite fiction book?
At the risk of sounding like a cop-out, I’ve never liked picking favorites because it depends on your mood and the context, but right now I’m reading “Wool” by Hugh Howey, the first book of the series Apple TV’s “Silo” is based upon.
