5 Questions with Jen Lampton
Jen is our guest host for episodes 416 thru 419.
Jen is an Open Source advocate. Web Team and Project lead. Drupal (provisional) security team member. Backdrop CMS Co-Founder. Expert avocado surgeon. Loves animals and likes houseplants.
Where is your sweet spot in the web development process (back-end developer, front-end developer, design, project management, sales ...)?
If I could choose, I would probably be a front-end developer. I love the instant gratification you get when seeing a design come to life. I’m needed more as back-end / full-stack / whatever developer, and project + team manager right now. So that’s what I’m doing instead.
What website build are you most proud of being involved with?
I was fortunate enough to work on the Habitat for Humanity website, https://www.habitat.org, when they first moved to Drupal. I got to work with a really great team at Habitat, as well as Elly Jonez, head of non-profit work at Chapter Three at the time.
Tell us about your family
I lost my dad this year. He was silly and funny, and a loving and supportive dad. But he was also the smartest person I have ever known, and probably will ever know. He was a space scientist, and at his memoial I was able to hear so many other brilliant scientists (including a Nobel prize winner) share how much they respected and admired his brilliance.
He was an astronaut, but was never able to fly due to his battle with cancer. We will be putting his ashes on a deep space mission this winter, so he will have the flight in death that he was not able to take in life.
Star Trek was something we enjoyed as a family. Dad will be on that space flight along side Gene Roddenberry (the creator of Star Trek); Gene's spouse, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry (Star Trek's "Lwaxana Troi"); and James Doohan ("Mr. Scott") as well as a handful of other astronauts.
Outside of Drupal, what hobbies do you have?
Teaching animals to talk (https://www.theycantalk.org/home). I’ve been impressed by how they learn, what they say, and how the dog and the cat use language differently.
I also ride horses (which is more sport than hobby) – and no, I have not yet tried to teach them to talk.
What is your favorite fiction book(s)?
I really like both the Commonwealth Saga (thanks to Todd Nienkerk for the recommendation) and the Ender’s Game Series – I’m a big sci-fi / fantasy fan.
