5 Questions with Randy Fay
Randy is our guest host for episodes 453 thru 456.
Randy is an old Drupal hack (and old hack in general) who has ended up maintaining DDEV these many years. He loves helping people out with the local development and website trouble, and also has had quite a life of bikepacking.
What was your first Drupal website?
It was probably hobobiker.com, which is still limping along as a Drupal 6 site. It's the story of Nancy and my various bicycle travels, including our 2.5 year ride from Canada to Argentina 2006-2009. Before it was Drupal I think it was Mambo (predecessor to Joomla!). It might have been hand-built PHP before that. I think it started its Drupal life as a Drupal 4.4 site.
What was your first programming language, and what did you do with it?
Applesoft BASIC wasn't my first language, but I used it in my first professional job to help build a home automation system called Compu-Home systems in the 1980s :) The Apple ][ wasn't a great platform for home automation, but there were some homes automated. I've done C and C++, Java, early JS, a few assembly languages, even a bit of C#.
Outside of Drupal, what hobbies do you have?
Well, lots of bike traveling/bikepacking. Many thousands of miles in many exotic places. Last December/January we rode the Carreterra Austral self-supported in Chile.
Tell us about your pets? Nancy and I have two cats. We fostered a pregnant mama cat who against all odds (she was tiny!) delivered 6 kittens. We kept the last two. They're more than 3 years old now, and lots of fun.
We all have professional disaster stories; do you care to share one?
Working on a project that implemented the first generation of cellular data for AT&T (on Sun Solaris machines in C and assembler) we had some very fancy hardware in a big rack that was super important and provided High Availability features. It was really expensive. One day the VP of the company was reconfiguring it and reconnecting some things. Somebody asked him if he was sure he was connecting the wires correctly. Wayne famously said "I take full responsibility", and a moment later it all sparked, smoked, and was ruined.

by Martin Anderson-Clutz
The tools available for creating content continue to improve, allowing editors to leverage more sophisticated capabilities with less complexity. But how can you make sure you’re getting the most impact from your content? And critically, is it enough to get your brand the visibility it needs? This talk will explore the strategies and tools you can use to develop content that is engineered for maximum effectiveness, from competitive analysis and AI-assisted creation, to robust A/B testing and personalization, and ensuring inclusiveness and legal compliance, wherever in the world your visitors might be.
Minifigure of the Week
by Nic Laflin
71008-01
This week I would like to share 71008-01 Classic King! This is the 1st minifigure in the 13th series of collectible minifigures. Released in 2015, this has become a really popular figure since the castle series has come back. I love the double cloak!
